Because Somebody Prayed

Because Somebody Prayed

The Prayers of the Generations Before You

Have you ever paused to consider how many prayers have been spoken over your life?

Prayers whispered by a mother or father. Prayers spoken faithfully by grandparents, aunts, uncles, or friends who loved you before you even knew their names. Prayers you may never hear about, yet prayers God used to gently guide, protect, and shape the course of your life.

There is something deeply comforting about generational prayers—especially the ones we later realize have been answered.

When my mom was pregnant with me, she asked the Lord for a healthy baby girl and made a promise she fully intended to keep. As she prayed over me, she committed to raising me in the church, teaching me to know and love the Lord. Even in seasons when I wandered and didn’t walk as closely with God as I should have, she never stopped praying. She never stopped believing.

The Lord placed her in a workplace that loved Him and leaned on Him daily. Each morning began in prayer. During the years when I was trying my hardest to stray, several of her coworkers—past and present—faithfully joined her in praying over me.

Just recently, I spoke with one of those sweet women. We laughed as we reminisced about my teenage years and how grateful I am that God carried me through that season. She smiled and said, “Oh, I remember. I prayed over you often.”

What a gift—to know that prayers spoken years ago are still bearing fruit.

That same woman continues to pray over me today, and now, even more intentionally, she prays over my daughter.

When I stop and truly consider the depth of prayer surrounding my daughter—family, friends, and even strangers lifting her name to the Lord—it fills my heart with peace. Early in our trial, a pastor shared words that have stayed with me:

“It’s okay if you don’t have the strength to whisper a prayer some days, because you have an army lifting you up when you can barely move.”

That was the reminder my heart desperately needed. I don’t have to carry this alone. God, in His goodness, has surrounded us with prayer warriors to help fight this battle. He never intended for us to walk through suffering on our own.

Deuteronomy 7:9 (NLT) reminds us:

“Understand, therefore, that the LORD your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands.”

We serve a God who goes before us and behind us. He knew us generations before we were ever created. The prayers of those who came before us continue to echo through time, reaching farther than we can see.

Even now, we are living in the midst of answered prayers—prayers we may never know were prayed.

May you find rest in that truth.

May you find peace knowing you are covered.

And may you trust that God is faithful, from generation to generation.
