Psalm 91:3-6 NIV
3 Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.
The fowler’s snare is a quiet, calculated trap—one the enemy sets slowly and subtly, meant to draw you in without raising alarm. It is rarely loud or obvious. More often, it is patient, disguised, and waiting, luring you into deception before you even realize danger is near.
Before studying this passage more closely, I never fully understood what pestilence meant. When I learned that it includes disease, it felt like confirmation. God knew—long before we were born—the battles we would face. Nothing we encounter ever catches Him by surprise.
Verses 4 and 5 remind us of this truth: we are covered. God’s faithfulness surrounds us like a shield. Whether we fear what the night may bring or what the day could hold, we are never outside His watchful care. His protection does not waver with the hour.
Verse 6 speaks of the “pestilence that stalks in the darkness.” These words point to unseen, creeping dangers—forces that move quietly and strike without warning. When I first read this, it stopped me in my tracks. Tumors hide in the darkness of the body, growing slowly or swiftly, often undetected until they wage war from within. They are evidence of a broken world, where evil runs rampant and life can change in an instant.
But God.
Even when evil attempts to wreak havoc on your life, your Lord and Savior never leaves your side. Psalm 91 is powerful because it anchors us in God’s promises—promises of refuge, protection, and deliverance. I am deeply grateful for this reminder written in His Word, a confirmation that He goes before us in every aspect of life.
When fear rises in the night or uncertainty follows us through the day, that is the moment to ask God to remind us that we are never alone. He goes before us, walks beside us, and holds us securely in every season.
